Introduction to Cortaillod, Switzerland
The village of Cortaillod and its municipality is located in Switzerland's Neuchatel canton in Boudry district, with the delicious Pinot Noir wines from the region bottled under the village's name. Home to around 4,500 residents, the area has been famous for its wines for hundreds of years. Amazingly, settlement in the immediate region goes back 6,500 years to the prehistoric era, with artefacts from local excavations giving names to three ancient periods in human history, Cortaillod old, classic and late. This delightful village is divided into two sections by vineyards; Little Cortaillod on the shore of Lake Neuchatel and Greater Cortaillod on the hillside, giving magnificent views of the lake and the Swiss Alps. Cortaillod hotels can be found in both areas, with many visitors preferring the views if the Greater district, especially during the winter months when the mountains glisten with snow. Interesting buildings include the parish church, the landmark of the village with its elegantly slim and unusually tall bell tower.
