Introduction to Chateau-d’Oex, Switzerland
For those old enough to remember the suave British actor David Niven, it says a lot about Chateau-d Oex to know that he lived here for much of his adult life. This is a ski resort known for good manners and low-key elegance. Even children are well-behaved here, and there are a lot of them, the resort being well known for its popularity with families. Located midway between Gstaad and Gruyere, this French-speaking town has some of the former's sophistication with a tempering dose of the latter's small-town sensibility. The hotels in Chateau-d Oex tend to be high-end, but budget travellers can find rooms on the outskirts of town. The last week in January is notoriously busy, with hot-air 'Balloon Week' bringing in enthusiasts from all over the world. Dozens of downhill slopes and hundreds of kilometres of cross-country trails draw skiers in sometimes dense crowds. In summer, hikers and climbers take to the adjacent forests. Rainy-day options include a visit to the local ant museum, or a look at how the celebrated local cheese, etivaz, is still produced the old-fashioned way in homey kitchens.
