Introduction to Champery, Switzerland
Nestled at the foot of the Dents Blanches and the Dents du Midi in the Illiez Valley is the charming, small village of Champery, popular with winter sports fans as well as nature-lovers for its magnificent setting at the centre of the immense Les Portes du Soleil recreation area. A favourite with European visitors for 150 years, the village was one of the founding settlements for Portes du Soleil. Its tiny streets and quaint Alpine chalets, many of which are Champery hotels and bed and breakfasts, are set close to one of the largest ski areas on the planet, with 194 lifts and 650kms of pistes. Activities here include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, paragliding, winter hiking and summer walking or just relaxing and admiring the glorious scenery from an on-slope eatery. Traditional restaurants in the village offer warming and filling cuisine, and local discos and bars provide plenty of fun for night-owls.
