Introduction to Burgenstock, Switzerland
The transportation that serves Burgenstock is an attraction in itself. Visitors can see the beauty of Lake Lucerne by boat and then take a funicular railway up to the resorts. The electric railway is Switzerland's oldest and despite being renovated in 2002, some original features from 1888 still remain, such as the lacquered benches and the red carriages. This exclusive area is actually owned by the group of Burgenstock hotels occupying the plateau, and services include a nine-hole golf course and a luxury spa. Following the Felsenweg path east along the cliff top takes walkers to a lift which can whisk them up to Hammetschwand, the area's highest point at 1,132m. The lift is unique as not only is it Europe's highest outdoor elevator, but it is also one of the fastest as it travels 153m in around 50 seconds.
