Introduction to Bulle, Switzerland
The district of Gruyere in the Swiss canton of Fribourg is famous for its hard cheese and the location of the municipality of Bulle, recently incorporated with its very near neighbour, La Tour de Treme. The towns have a combined population of 18,000, and are surrounded by various smaller towns and villages. Bulle is an historic town with many attractive traditional buildings, and is set on the Fribourg Pre-Alp slopes, containing forested hills and pastures. Tradition is important to the town through tourism, with the medieval walled Bulle Castle a favourite destination. The town boasts a number of attractive Bulle hotels, a charming market square, ancient churches, rows of picturesque dwellings and Alpine chalets. In winter, the snow covers all, turning the townscape into a sparkling wonderland and attracting winter sports enthusiasts in high numbers, especially over the Christmas holiday. Close by is the picturesque village of Gruyere, where the distinctive cheese was first made - now an important tourism hub for its massive castle and streets crammed with original medieval homes.
