Introduction to Brig, Switzerland
Literally surrounded by Alpine peaks, Brig looks like any of the several Italian villages just over the border. However, German is the language spoken here - or a German dialect that is unique to Brig. The town's name reflects the Latin for bridge, and there is one in the centre of town, crossing a narrow but picturesque Rhone tributary lined with footpaths and biking trails. The town's gentle appearance belies the occasional ferocity of its weather; temperatures stay below freezing virtually all winter, and summer is known to be exceptionally hot. Nonetheless, the one-time farming community has been a popular ski resort for more than a century. Many of its most distinguished buildings date from the 17th century, including two colleges, a convent and a High Baroque palace, all built by a man whose family at the time controlled all the salt in this part of Europe. There is an attractive town centre with a number of small inns and bed-and-breakfasts and also a handful of full service hotels in Brig, mostly near the 19th century railway station.
