Introduction to Brienz, Switzerland
Set in a spectacular scenic location on the banks of Lake Brienz, overlooked by the Brienzer Rothorn peak, the pretty municipality and small town of Brienz is home to just over 3,000 people. Settled for 3,500 years, the surrounding Alpine valleys were conquered by the Romans, who remained in possession of the town until the end of their empire. The medieval lakeside town was first mentioned 1,000 years ago. The main activities here are woodcarving and tourism, with genuine Bern cuckoo clocks the main product, with many tourists staying in the pretty Brienz hotels taking one of these clocks home as a lasting souvenir. The quaint town is also home to the Ballenberg Open Air Museum with its over 100 historic buildings collected from all over Switzerland and reassembled in this stunning location.
