The ancient Swiss village of Breil lies in the mountainous east-central district of Surselva, in the Graubunden canton, and was first settled in the early Middle Ages.
Well-known nowadays as a popular ski resort, the charming little town is home to 1,200 permanent residents, with this number swollen by winter sports enthusiasts and summer visitors.
Set on a terrace overlooking the Vorderrhein Valley to the south, Breil hotels and Alpine chalets are geared to the ski season.
Interestingly, 80 per cent of the population speak the ancient Rhaeto-Romance language.
Briel ski resort, known also as Brigels, lies at 1,300m above sea level, with ski-in, ski-out possible at many of the hotels, and a charming village centre little changed from 100 years ago.
Road access from the west in winter is impossible due to the closing of two mountain passes, but cars can be carried on the train route through the Furka Base Tunnel.
The ski season here begins at the end of November and continues to the middle of April.
