Set on a plateau in the jagged peaks of the Bernese Oberland, close to the Laun Pass, is the municipality and village of Boltigen with its community of 1,400 residents.

The surrounding countryside is heavily forested, with just over 50 per cent used for either agriculture or as grazing land.

As with most small Swiss mountain villages, Boltigen has a following of winter sports enthusiasts and summer walkers and hikers who regularly stay at the pretty Alpine chalet-style Boltigen hotels.

Increasingly, especially for domestic skiers, the smaller Swiss resorts are becoming more popular, with Boltigen providing facilities for both downhill and cross-country skiers as well as snowboarders.

Although the resort has only three lifts, it boasts an impressive 987m vertical and 20kms of pistes as well as 15kms of well-kept cross country trails.

The season here runs from late December to early May, embracing the Christmas holiday, and the unspoilt resort is easily accessed via Bern Airport.
