Blenio is a municipality in the south of Italy of around 1,800 people.
Given its location in Ticino, close to the Italian border, it is unsurprising to find that the vast majority of residents speak Italian.
The municipality is fairly young; it was only formed in 2006 from five formerly independent villages.
Much of the tourist activity centres on two of these villages; Campo and Ghirone.
They were first developed as winter-sports centres after 1958, when the Toira road-tunnel was completed.
Nowadays, Campo is a popular base for hikers beginning a walking tour in the Greina, one of Switzerland's last wild areas.
Another village, Olivone, became a popular destination much later, in the early 2000s.
This village, which lies at the foot of the 2,221-metre high Sosto Mountain, mainly caters to those interested in nature and National Heritage sites.
Here, guests staying at Blenio hotels have the chance to visit the Parish Church of S Martino, a 12th century church which was rebuilt in the 18th century.
One of the older buildings actually dates back to the 15th century, and is worth visiting for its valuable furniture collection.
