Introduction to Bivio, Switzerland
On a plateau high in the Swiss Alps lies the tiny village of Bivio, set in Albula district, in the canton of Graubunden. Verdant in summer and snow-covered in winter, the settlement is surrounded by bare peaks and home to just 207 permanent residents. Incorporating the nearby even smaller hamlets of Valetta da Bevia, Stalveder, Cavreccia and Mott, the area offers spectacular panoramic mountain views, particularly from the few Bivio hotels available here. This region has been inhabited since before the Roman era, with Bivio itself mentioned 1,200 years ago. An important Roman mountain shrine lies close by at Julier Pass, and is listed as a Swiss Heritage site of national significance. Only some 22kms from St Moritz, the Bivio slopes attract skiers looking for peace, quiet and a cheaper skiing holiday than in the more fashionable resorts.
