Introduction to Bedretto, Switzerland
A tiny cluster of red-roofed chalets housing just 67 residents set by a bridge over a rushing stream forms the hamlet of Bedretto, set in the steep, narrow and winding Bedretto Valley in Switzerland's Leventina district. Looming over the hamlet on both sides of the valley are the jagged peaks of the Cristallina Massif, with forested slopes below the tree line and bare rocks above. Officially part of the village of Fontana, at the head of the valley, this remote settlement lacks transport or any industry, with just a few orchards and pastures irrigated by the Ticino stream. The lack of permanent residents in the valley is offset by locals returning from the cities during the warm summer months and by an influx of outdoor sports enthusiasts in the winter. The isolation of this quaint little resort attracts skiers for its affordability, peace and quiet, with Bedretto hotels comprising one pretty chalet and a number of rental apartments, bed and breakfasts and smaller chalets scattered along the valley.
