Introduction to Avenches, Switzerland
The historic Swiss municipality and village of Avenches lies in Vaud canton, in the Broye-Vully district, with its ancient roots going as far back as Celtic times. Around 2,000 years ago, a Roman settlement, Aventicum, was well established here with an amphitheatre and other structures, some of which are still visible today. By the 3rd century AD, the town contained 20,000 inhabitants and was a major commercial hub, but was in decline from the 6th century until the 16th century. Nowadays, Avenches hotels offer traditional Swiss hospitality to tourists exploring the little town, now in its entirety a Swiss Heritage site. The Roman ruins, including the amphitheatre, a theatre and a temple, Avenches Castle, the parish church, the Bishop's Tower and the Roman Museum are all listed as sites of special national significance, and draw many visitors every year to the little town. The old city walls still stand, lined with quaint old stone-built houses, and the village square holds weekly markets just as it has for hundreds of years.
