Introduction to Andermatt, Switzerland
Set in a verdant valley surrounded by looming mountains, the pretty Swiss village of Andermatt is home to just over 1,000 permanent residents, joined by a good many winter sports enthusiasts during the winter skiing season. The village is a typical Alpine settlement, with quaint chalet-style homes and Andermatt hotels set amid spectacular natural beauty. Snow-covered in winter, with its flowery meadows and Alpine pastures a riot of colour in spring and summer, Andermatt is a heaven for photographers as well as outdoor sports enthusiasts. Set in the Adula Alps in the beautiful and remote Ursern Valley, the settlement lies on the crossroads between all four compass directions in Switzerland and is connected to the rest of the country via four Alpine passes. Although the community was first mentioned in 1203 AD, there are few heritage buildings here, with a Swiss Army training centre the only activity apart from tourism and agriculture. With its skiing and snowboarding facilites, the village is seen by domestic and international arrivals alike as an economic alternative to the major ski resorts such as Gstaad and St Moritz.
