Introduction to Albula, Switzerland
The Swiss Alps district of Albula is perhaps best known for its mountain range and river of the same name. It is situated southeast of the city of Zurich, close to the Austrian and Italian borders. The name is commonly associated with the Albula railway line, which 100 years after being built still maintained in almost entirely its original condition. This spectacular mountain railway travels through switchback tunnels, under covered sections and above high up viaducts. This stunning landscape which the line passes is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage listing. The Albula Alps are also home to the world famous St Moritz ski resort, visited by masses of tourists every year. However, much of the rest of the region remains relatively untouched, with just a few small resorts which can leave you oblivious to the St Moritz's glitz and glamour just a few miles away. There are a number of Albula hotels in St Moritz and others dotted throughout the area, all offering stunning surroundings and the opportunity for a peaceful holiday.
