Introduction to Aigle, Switzerland
Located at the foot of the Alps, on the east side of the lower Rhone valley, Aigle is French-speaking and has a French name that means 'eagle', but it was the Romans who first made the connection between this settlement on the road to Italy and the birds soaring overhead. Surrounded by mountains, the town remains an eagle's paradise - and a skier's, lying within easy reach of abundant slopes and trails. It is at the centre of the Alpine railway network that links Rome with Geneva and more than three million travellers pass through the train station at Aigle each year, making tourism the town's primary industry. The town's centre is a medieval showplace of cheek-by-jowl houses along narrow lanes. From vineyards near town rise the three towers and parapet of Schloss Aigles. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle was rebuilt after a fire in the late 1400s. In the summer, the town is a popular cycling spot, and is the headquarters of the International Cycling Union, which sponsors competitions throughout the world. Hotels in Aigle tend to be small and family-run. other spellings: agilehotels, agiul otel, agiel hotell, agire hote, aigel hotes, ailge hotle
