Introduction to Adelboden, Switzerland
Adelboden is a small municipality in southwestern Switzerland that's big on annual festivities. These include the World Cup alpine ski races for men in January, the live-music Vogellisi Festival in July as well as the Vogellisi Lauf mountain-running race, also in July. The nearby Engstligenalp plateau is gorgeous and makes a good setting for outdoors exploratory activities such as hiking and mountain biking during the summer. There's also a 600-metre waterfall here on the Engstligen River that is one of the area's best. Try to get a look at the Alpaufzug, a seasonal migration in which some 350 cows are driven to higher elevations on a narrow cliff-side path to summer pasture on the Engstligenalp. Come wintertime, the skiing is fantastic. A chief attraction is Choleren Gorge, which has watermills and waterfalls. Adelboden hotels mix nicely into the semi-rural setting, making an attractive place to hang your hat for the night.
