By air: the main airport servicing the Stockholm area is Arlanda Airport, although in fact there are three additional facilities that also service the area, largely used by low-cost operators. Arlanda is located approximately 25 miles north of Stockholm, and the trip takes from 45 minutes to one hour on the airport buses that depart from the central terminal.
Train service to the city’s central rail station only takes around 20 minutes, with service operating from the airport every 15 minutes. Taxis and plentiful and hiring a car is always an option. This airport is a major transportation hub for the region and the 15th largest in Europe.
Skavsta Airport, 60 miles south-west of Stockholm, is the Swedish base for Ryanair flights coming from Stansted in the UK and Vasteras Airport is the base for its flights originating in London Luton. Vasteras is approximately 60 miles west of Stockholm, and both airports have shuttle service operating on a schedule that accommodates the arrival and departure of Ryanair flights.
The third alternative facility is Bromma Airport, a small city airport handling domestic flights and a few flights originating in Europe. It is six miles from the centre of Stockholm, and frequent shuttle bus service provides transfer to the city.
By bus: long distance bus services arrive at the City Terminal, located next to Stockholm’s central rail station. Most services are provided by Eurolines, which link literally hundreds of destinations throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Paris and Rome.
The trip by bus from Copenhagen to Stockholm takes approximately eight hours; and from Oslo it takes about seven hours. Domestic services cover all areas of the country, and services terminate at the City Terminal as well. Note that there are few connections to the far north of Sweden.
By ferry: daily ferry services make the crossing from Helsinki and Turka, in Finland, and also from Tallinn, Estonia. The two main ferry operators are Silja Line, which arrives at Vartan port, and Viking Line, coming in to Stadsgarden. Buses connect both ports with the city terminal and the metro system.
You’ll find the ferry services to be very efficient, with comfortable cabins and good food available on board. The ferry connecting Helsinki with Stockholm is especially popular for weekend trips, and the scenery along the way is spectacular.
