In the summertime, beaches and parks fill up with locals and visitors, while there are also plenty of opportunities to watch some of the most popular team sports here – with football at the top of the list.
Air ballooning: has become quite popular and you’ll find a number of companies offering hot air balloon rides over the city’s beautiful islands. It’s a good idea to book in advance and if you’re fortunate enough to go up on a sunny day, the experience will certainly be a memorable one, as the city and the surrounding area are spectacular from this perspective.
Football: as in most European countries, football is an enormously popular sport, both for spectators and for those who like to have a bit of fun in the park. Stockholm city has three official teams: AIK, Djurgardens IF and Hammarby IF. During football season, at least one of the home teams will be playing on Saturday, making it quite convenient for visitors to take in a match during their visit and to see some of the country’s best players in action.
Ice skating: during mid-winter, Stockholm’s lakes freeze over and are used for ice skating. Residents take to the ice enthusiastically, this being one of the most popular cold-weather activities. The King’s Garden is a favourite and provides skate hire facilities. The city’s only artificial ice skating rink is at Ostermalms Idrottsplats, and is also a busy place during the winter.
