Introduction to Stockholm - Sodermalm
The island of Sodermalm in Stockholm’s central district is a densely populated, newly hip area connected to the rest of the city by numerous bridges. A mix of pretty squares, historic buildings and modern skyscrapers, it’s famous for its alternative culture and bohemian lifestyle, with charming, small rural areas covered in tiny allotments as well as broad streets lined with restaurants, entertainment venues, bars and Sodermalm hotels. Once a working-class neighbourhood, it is nowadays an enclave for Sweden’s middle and upper classes. Ryssgarden Square and traditional streets such as Brannkyrkagatan are popular places to wander, and the many old churches here including Maria Magdalena Church, St Eric’s Cathedral, Katerina Church and Sofia Kyrka. Sodermalm’s So-Fo district is the place to see and be seen, with boutiques, upscale home decorator stores, nightlife and other trendsetting new businesses.
