Introduction to Stockholm - City Centre
The capital city of Sweden, Stockholm lies on a series of bridge-linked islands on Lake Malaren. The lake is slightly inland from the nation’s western Baltic Sea coastline. The centre of the city is focussed on two small districts, Norrmalm and Gamla Stan, which are separated by a waterway. Gamla Stan is the original city district and features cobblestone streets lined with architectural gems. The German Church, Storkyrkan Cathedral and Stockholm Palace are among the visitor draws here. The National Museum is across the water in Norrmalm and houses a collection that comprises 45,000 paintings and artefacts. The Vasa Museum is farther along the waterfront and houses a salvaged 17th century warship. In Norrmalm, Drottninggatan street and Sergels Torg square are at the heart of the city’s shopping district. Lots of Stockholm city centre hotels are located in both central districts and provide visitors with easy access to the main sites. Restaurants in the area serve anything from Swedish kottbullar meatballs to burgers at international franchises. Visit our Stockholm Travel Guide
