Introduction to Oland, Sweden
Oland is located on the southeastern part of Sweden and is the second-largest island of the country. The island has recently become famous, with Swedish crime writers Henning Mankell and Johan Theorin basing their stories here. Yet, Oland is a peaceful and beautiful place. The island can easily be reached by bridge or ferry. The main attractions are the 17th century Borgholm Castle, which used to be the summer home of the Swedish royal family. Oland is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, the limestone plain of Stora Alvaret. This plain is home to important biodiversity as well as the pre-historic sites of Gettlinge Gravefield (like a mini Stonehenge), dating back to the Bronze Age. Exploring this amazing area on foot is a must. For those visiting Oland in September, the annual harvest festival should not be missed. Visitors will find plenty of Oland hotels dotted the around the island to choose from. Mostly accommodation is situated on the western side of the island, which is sheltered from the Baltic Sea.
