Introduction to Malmo, Sweden
Originally a fortified Danish port built in 1272, the city of Malmo is today part of Sweden, where it draws tourists with its many historic attractions, natural scenery and easy access to Denmark. From Malmo hotels, visitors can easily reach the scenic waterfront areas to the north as well as the pretty parks of Slottparken and Pildammsparken. Many of the key attractions are easily visited in an area nearby comprised of Gustav Adolf's Square, Big Square and Little Square. The beautiful 16th century City Hall is found here, as are the historic house of a former mayor, Kockska Huset, and a prominent statue of the great King Karl X Gustav. There is plenty of excellent shopping in this part of the city as well as restaurants, bars and cafes. The city's 15th century castle, Malmohus, sits at the northern end of Slottsparken. Just west of the castle is the impressive Technology and Maritime Museum. Scandinavia's tallest building, the 190m-tall Turning Torso, is impressive and easy to find but offers no chance of scenic views. The city's oldest church, the 14th century Sankt Petri Kyrka, is a few minutes to the city centre's north.Visit our Malmo Travel Guide
