Introduction to Avesta, Sweden
Avesta is infamous for being home to the largest Dalecarlian horse. The Dalecarlian horse is a traditional hand-carved and painted horse. The one here is painted bright red and made of concrete, making it hard to miss. The town is located in the eastern part of central Sweden, right on the Dalecarlia River. Historically, this region has been known for its copper mining, and Avesta Coin Museum is well worth visiting. It has one of the most comprehensive collections of Swedish coins in the country. Next on the itinerary should be the Hyttan, or Smelting House, which showcases the industrial history of the region. The Carl Jularbo Museum is a must-visit for music lovers. Carl or Calle Jularbo was Sweden's most famous accordionist and the museum pays tribute to his career. To get a feel for what Avesta must have been like in the old days, head to the Gamla Byn (Old Village) area, where most of the best-preserved historic buildings are located. Most Avesta hotels are clustered around the city centre, within walking distance of the train station.
