By air: Bandaranaike International Airport is located about 32kms from the city centre and receives a large number of flights everyday. If you want to fly direct, Sri Lankan Airlines is the only airline offering this service. From the airport, you can take a train or a bus to the beaches. Taxis are also aplenty, but will work out to be an expensive option.
By sea plane: if you want to experience island hopping in style, sea planes are provided by Sri Lankan Airlines. Enjoy a bird’s eye view as you travel on a small 8-seater Cessna Caravan planes that conveniently use waterways, lakes and domestic airstrips to land and take-off. Flights currently run to many tourist destinations including islands such as Bentota and Galle. Jaffna and Trincomalee can also be reached by airplane on a domestic flight.
By train: there are three main rail lines on Sri Lanka. The Coast Line connects the southern coastal towns of Matara, Galle, Hikkaduwa and Aluthgama with Colombo, while the Main Line travels east connecting Kandy, Nanu Oya, Ella, Colombo and Badulla. The Northern Line links Anuradhapura and Vavuniya with Colombo. Trains are a comfortable way to see the country, although they are often late.
