Health for Visitors to Sri Lanka
It is advisable to get vaccinated against rabies and tetanus before entering Sri Lanka as rabies is widespread and common in local cats, dogs, squirrels, monkeys and other animals. Be particularly careful when visiting the natural parks as several animals carrying rabies reside in these parks. Mosquitoes also thrive in the dense forests and jungles.
The Sri Lankan government recommends that all travellers be vaccinated for Hepatitis A & B, polio, yellow fever (if person has been in a yellow fever infected area within a year of arrival to Sri Lanka), Japanese Encephalitis and tetanus-diptheria.
First time travellers may also find the sun overpowering. Always use sun cream and avoid the sun from between 12:00 to 15:00, when it is at its hottest. Always drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
Medical facilities, even those at Colombo, are usually not up to the standard that you will be used to in your home country. There are limited emergency services available and it is advisable for visitors to bring their own medication including charcoal tablets and Imodium for diarrhoea.
