Trekking: the countryside within the Cultural Triangle is full of spectacular scenic places to explore on foot on extended treks. Many tour operators can arrange excursions that vary in duration and difficulty, but all of which give tourists opportunity to sample the rich natural and cultural diversity of the region.
Elephant riding: a must for any visitor to Sri Lanka, elephant riding is offered by most cities and towns in the Cultural Triangle. The rides can just be for half and hour and around historic sites, or can be day-long safaris that take in some wilderness areas. These majestic beasts are well cared for by their mahouts, and rides are usually very safe and professionally operated.
Bird watching: there are many popular bird watching areas within the Cultural Triangle, not the least of which are the main archaeological sites themselves, which were located near important water sources that birds frequent during the dry season. In the hills there are many untouched wilderness and wetland areas that attract and support hundreds of different species of birds, such as Painted Stork, Open-billed Stork, White Ibis and Spoonbill. Birds are not the only thing you are likely to spot, as the region also supports large numbers of mammals (elephants, leopards, bears), and reptiles (cobras, pythons, turtles, tortoises).
Shopping: searching out unique and quality items for purchase is one of the most popular activities for tourists to the Cultural Triangle. There is a wondrous array of items for sale, including embroidery, handicrafts, batik work, jewellery, gems, leather goods, silverware, and bags. Outlets include traditional markets, stalls, malls and speciality shops.
