Anuradhapura Archaeological Museum: this is the pick of the region’s museums for those with an interest in ancient artefacts. With thousands of items on display, this museum documents the development of various cultural arts across the lengthy Anuradhapura period, which lasted more than 1,300 years.
Considered by many to be the Golden Age of Sri Lankan civilization, the Anuradhapura period featured an emphasis on Buddhist imagery, which is reflected in the priceless collections of statues, icons, sculptures, bas-reliefs, and murals on display. There are also enthralling sets of everyday items used by the local people of the era.
Abayagiri Monastery Museum: the great museum showcases many of the artefacts that have been unearthed on the grounds of this huge temple complex in Anuradhapura, which was one of the most important religious sites of its time. While there are the usual magnificent Buddhist works, there are also intriguing items that depict the frugal lifestyles of the many monks that once populated the temple grounds.
Jethawana Treasure House: situated in the Jethawana temple complex, this fabulous treasure house contains some of the most revered Buddhist imagery in Sri Lanka. Located in Anuradhapura, this museum complements the two other main archaeological museums in the city, with most artefacts dating from the 3rd century.
Sigiriya Archaeological Museum: another museum that showcases ancient treasures unearthed during excavations and renovations of an important archaeological site. Most of the artefacts on display are from the 5th century, although some predate this period. Of note is the collection of royal items brought to Sigiriya by the deranged king, Kasyapa, from Anuradhapura.
Sigiriya Eco Culture Centre: this important museum offers visitors a chance to experience the intriguing culture and traditions of the local Sigiriya area people. Exhibits include displays on traditional livelihood, tools, handicrafts, clothing, rituals and food preparation.
Kandy Archaeological Museum: a perfect introduction to the treasures of the Cultural Triangle, the Kandy Archaeological Museum has a wide selection of artefacts and artworks from across the region, representing all of the major styles and ancient Sri Lankan culture. The exhibits are well presented and comfortable to peruse. The museum store also has the best collection of books, maps, posters, postcards and other material on the ancient history of the Cultural Triangle.
