Additionally, Kandy is often host to wonderful sporting events such as international marathons, and in 2003 the city hosted the Sri Lanka IRB Rugby Sevens tournament.
February Festivals
Independence Day: this important day commemorates Sri Lanka’s independence from Britain, which was attained on February 4, 1948. The actual day of the festival is flexible, however is usually around the middle of the month. Celebrations include parades, pageants, cultural performances and re-enactments of historically significant events. This enthralling event is celebrated in every city and town within the Cultural Triangle.
June Festivals
Vesak Full Moon: one of the major Buddhist festivals and celebrated worldwide, Vesak Day remembers the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. There are processions, pandals, pageants, illuminations, decorations, and plenty of food and refreshments on offer at roadside stalls. Vesak Full Moon usually falls in June.
July/August Festivals
Poson Full Moon: this festival commemorates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and while it is celebrated across the country, the main festivities take place at Mihintale, a small town 10km outside Anuradhapura where Buddhism was first preached. There is a smorgasbord of religious events as well as processions and illuminations. Poson Full Moon usually occurs in July or August.
November Festivals
Deepavali: the Hindi Festival of Lights is a magical event to experience, when Hindu believers decoratively light up their homes to welcome Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of health and beauty. This festival is usually celebrated in November.
December Festivals
Id-UI-Fitr: this is the final day of the Muslim fasting month and is celebrated in all cities and towns in the country by the faithful and bystanders who enjoy lots of great food and festivities. The date for this event fluctuates from year to year, but it usually falls at the end of November or beginning of December.
