By air: located approximately 32kms from the city centre, Bandaranaike International Airport is served by many international and regional airlines, including its very own national airline Sri Lankan Airways. The airport is fully equipped with a wide range of facilities including ATM machines, airport hotels, banks, bureaux de change kiosks, post offices, duty-free shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and disabled facilities.
From the airport, tourists can connect to the bus or train services that run from the airport to the city centre. It takes about 45 minutes by bus. Taxis can also be arranged from Arrivals.
By train: there is a comprehensive rail network within Sri Lanka. The network boasts nine lines linking Colombo with many major and industrial centres. Main routes from Colombo include the Intercity Express trains to Kandy and Galle. It is however highly recommended that you make reservations at least the day before you travel to be sure of a seat. Rail services are run by Sri Lanka Railways.
By taxi: getting around Colombo can be easily managed by taxis which are usually very convenient and very good value for money. You must however remember that very few taxis have air-conditioning or meters, so do practice your bargaining skills. Taxis can be booked in advance by your hotel, or flagged down in the street and are available to take you on journeys throughout the city as well as out of town.
