Introduction to Southwest Coast - Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa is a popular coastal town in the southwest of Sri Lanka. The town was affected by the 2004 tsunami, but has made a great recovery in becoming one of the region's top tourist destinations. It is said to be one of the best places in Sri Lanka to enjoy scuba diving, surfing and spectacular sunsets. The best time to go surfing is from November to March, which is considered to be the region's dry season. On the other hand, beginner divers will be well-suited to the shallow waters off Hikkaduwa, while the more experienced can dive further offshore. Here, the water is clearer and the abundance of fish greater. Alternatively, those looking for something more relaxing can enjoy glass-bottomed boat trips over the reefs instead. Given the popularity of the town with surfers, it's no surprise that it enjoys a buzzing nightlife. In addition, shoppers can find plenty of tailors in the town offering made-to-measure clothing at affordable prices. Hikkaduwa hotels are easily accessible from the capital, Colombo, by bus, train or car. The journey takes around four hours by bus, while trains tend to be much slower and are not therefore not recommended.Visit our Southwest Coast Travel Guide
