Introduction to Southwest Coast - Ahungalla
Few beaches in Sri Lanka are considered more beautiful than the one named after the village of Ahungalla, on the nation's southwest coast in the district of Galle. Although the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami devastated much of this region, it has successfully recovered, and Ahungalla hotels, among the region's most luxurious, are once again welcoming guests from throughout the world. Coconut groves grow around the sandy main beach, where lifeguards test the waters daily to make sure whether or not it is safe for wading. Another nearby beach in Kosgoda is famous for the numerous turtles swimming along the coast. The Ambagahapityia Welitara temple may be Buddhist, but its architecture was heavily influenced by the Dutch who ruled over the region when it was constructed. Several street vendors sell traditional masks dyed with vegetable paints and made from wood. Moonstones are for sale at a quarry in nearby Meetiyagoda, and a handicraft centre holds a busy market each Tuesday. Ahungalla is less than 100kms from Colombo.Visit our Southwest Coast Travel Guide
