Introduction to Southwest Coast - Ahangama
The seaside village of Ahangama is situated on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, 136kms south of its national capital, Colombo. Most visitors to this peaceful community are surfers, so Ahangama hotels are at their busiest between November and April, the months which provide the most ideal snorkelling and surfing conditions. The uncrowded beaches here are also ideal places for beginners to learn surfing from one of the several local instructions. Early mornings provide the best conditions when the sun does not get into surfers' eyes. Coral and rocks cover most of the beaches, making them uncomfortable for sunbathing, and surfers must travel the 40kms to Hikkaduwa to obtain or fix their gear. The other main attractions here, aside from water sports, are the colourful Kathaluwa Temple, three kilometres away, and a sea turtle hatchery and farm along the coast.
