Introduction to Negombo, Sri Lanka
Negombo is a Sri Lankan beach town not far from the large city, Colombo. The economy survives mostly on the small town’s fishing industry and large tourist draw due to its port and accompanying beaches. The majority of the residents, mostly fishermen, live in poverty, a sharp contrast to the nearby hotels in Negombo, which are styled to match its beach resorts. The resort town is very close to the country’s international airport, and as such is a popular beach holiday spot for vacationing European tourists. Hotels in Negombo are widely available, most of which are close to the area’s great beaches. The town has a similar feel to Venice, as the city’s 100 metre-long canal networks are still commonly used as transportation.
