Introduction to Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka
Mount Lavinia is a relatively new city to the south of Sri Lanka’s largest city, Colombo. The city is popular with tourists and has become a well known beach resort since its creation. Aside from its excellent beaches, the city also houses Sri Lanka’s National Zoological gardens, which are known to be some of the finest in Asia. Hotels in Mount Lavinia are widespread in the area which is increasingly popular with European holidaymakers. Although most recognized for its Golden Mile beaches, the city also houses some of the country’s rich history. Also in the city is one of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious universities St Thomas College. Hotels in Mount Lavinia are also centered in the city’s history. The first hotel in the city was established in Sir Thomas Maitland’s house, former governor of Mount Lavinia in 1947, prior to that it had been used as a hospital during WWII.
