Introduction to Kandy, Sri Lanka
It's hard to find anything to dislike about Kandy, the cultural and religious heart of Sri Lanka. The ancient Sri Lankan kings loved this lush, cool mountainous area enough to build their final kingdom here, and it's easy to see why. With beautiful Buddhist temples scattered at every turn and unique holy attractions like the Temple of the Tooth, which contains the relic of Buddha's tooth, this is a place to become inspired. But Kandy is also simply a beautiful place. The lush Royal Botanical Gardens and the Udawattakele Royal Forest Sanctuary are part of the town, ensuring nature is never far from reach. This is also the best place in Sri Lanka to watch traditional dance and music performances from the Kandyan era. There isn't really a modern face to this town, but that's part of its charm. Shopping is done in quirky local shops selling handicrafts and other trinkets, and the restaurants are all humble but tasty affairs. There is a good selection of budget Kandy hotels as well as some nicer, more upscale accommodation right in town, giving everyone the chance to enjoy this wonderful city in the hills.Visit our Kandy Travel Guide
