As part of the plan to develop the island, the British brought Tamils labourers, from South India, to work the coffee, tea and rubber plantations. During this time the local Sinhalese and the Tamils began to have increasing clashes. Due to the increased conflicts and political pressure, Ceylon achieved independence in 1948. Tourism in Sri Lanka is a booming industry and the average tourist gets a lot more out of Sri Lanka than originally planned, its beauty alongside the friendliness of the people and natural habitat make it a perfect destination in which to escape the modern-day strife and find a peaceful sanctuary to relax. Unfortunately, internal politics has marred the destination and the ongoing conflict does pose threats to visitors.
