Colombo - look around the Jami Ul Alfar Mosque
It is nearly impossible to miss the Jami Ul Alfar Mosque in Colombo, because of its distinctive red and white stripes that cover nearly the whole of the building. Completed in 1909, the mosque is of major importance to the local Muslim community, and has become a major tourist attraction. Occasionally visitors are invited in to look around the interior, but the building is primarily a place of worship.Cultural Triangle - explore the Golden Temple of Dambulla
There are over 150 statues to find in the Golden Temple of Dambulla, as well as numerous paintings on the walls of the cave, where the temple is located. This site has been a focus for pilgrimage for over 2,200 years, and there are 5 different sections to the complex to explore. The Temple of Daladamaligawa or the Palace of the Tooth Relic, is home to the eye tooth of Buddha Gautama, one of the most important religious relics in Sri Lanka. It is seldom shown to the public, although the golden casket, covered with precious stones, where it is stored is available for public viewing. There is a ritual “washing” of the tooth, every Wednesday. The town of Galle, in the southwest of Sri Lanka, is thought to have been the biblical city of Tarshish. It has been a place of conflict for many centuries. The VOC Dutch Fortress is possibly the best preserved example of such a fortress building in Asia, and offers a lot to explore, especially the ramparts and the walls around the main gate. With a long and fascinating history, Sri Lanka offers tourists the chance to visit ancient ruins and religious temples while revelling in the refined atmosphere of its laid-back beach resorts. Many travellers fly to the capital Colombo, a congested city which features museums, galleries and beaches. The beaches are not as beautiful as those beaches farther south, but they have the advantage of hosting some of Sri Lanka's best nightlife. However, Sri Lanka hotels are not cheap in the capital and better value can be found elsewhere. Most true beach lovers head south to Galle, from where it is easy to reach idyllic resorts such as Unawatuna. Those looking to shun hedonism in exchange for spiritual enlightenment and a historical journey tend to head to the centre of the country instead. The city of Kandy has been recognised by UNESCO and is home to two well-known pilgrimage sites. The Temple of the (Buddha's) Tooth is one of the holiest sites in the country, while the Bahirawakanda Temple is home to a giant Buddha which dominates the city.
