Introduction to Cultural Triangle - Sigiriya
Sigiriya is an ancient city which is part of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Other attractions that are included in this zone are the sacred city of Anuradhapura and the ancient city of Dambulla. Sigiriya is located in Matale district and consists of a ruined palace surrounded by gardens and reservoirs. This area has been declared a World Heritage site and it is renowned for its paintings, which can be compared to those of the Ajanta Caves in India. It is believed that the site was inhabited in prehistoric times and it served as a mountain monastery in the 5th century BC. During this time, caves were prepared for monks by devotees before King Kashyapa built a palace here in 477 AD. The inscriptions at this site have been deciphered by archeologists and can be read in published books. Sigiriya hotels are located in the vicinity of this site to provide easy access to this internationally renowned attraction.Visit our Cultural Triangle Travel Guide
