Introduction to Cultural Triangle, Sri Lanka
Encompassing most of Sri Lanka's major ancient cities, the Cultural Triangle is one-stop shopping for fans of Kandyan kings and Buddhist beginnings. The sacred city of Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka's eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, is an ancient capital of Sri Lankan civilisation and one of the world's oldest continuously occupied cities. The archaeological and religious treasures here are impressive, but even more entrancing are the preserved ruins at Polonnaruwa, capital of one the earliest Sri Lankan kingdoms. The entire city is in excellent shape and nicely organised to make explorations a breeze. From massive reclining Buddhas to beautiful sandstone carvings, there is a lot to admire in Polonnaruwa. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and remains the country's most important cultural and religious centre. This is where most travellers base themselves for excursions to the ancient sites, as the best Cultural Triangle hotels are here along with other amenities. Set in the mountainous centre of the country, Kandy is a gem of a town and well worth lingering at for a week or more if time allows.Visit our Cultural Triangle Travel Guide
