Introduction to Colombo, Sri Lanka
From the ancient to the modern, Sri Lanka's capital of Colombo is an engaging blend of ruins, colonialism and glittering skyscrapers right on the sea. Perusing the wild montage of architecture is an essential part of any visit. From the lovely Jami Ul Alfar Mosque to the British Old Parliament Building, there are plenty of excellent historic sites right in the heart of Colombo. Fort is a key component of the capital's heritage, and the surrounding district is full of interesting sights. For a more social scene, stroll along Galle Face Green, the city's longest and most popular seaside promenade. There are some fantastic Colombo hotels along this mile-long strip that evoke the colonial era. The National Museum is certainly worth a visit to examine the 2,000-year timeline of kings, commerce and religion. Shop local style at Pettah Market or indulge in a chic cafe along Galle Road. There is no shortage of diverse places to eat, drink and shop in this lively, somewhat chaotic city by the sea. Visit our Colombo Travel Guide
