Introduction to Colombo - Airport
Bandaranaike International Airport serves the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo and its surrounding towns and is located some 35kms from the city centre. It is Sri Lanka's only international air hub, and was founded as an RAF base in 1944, during WWII. At present, the complex is undergoing upgrading and renovation, with a new passenger train service already running between the complex and the city. The new terminal is expected to be functional by late 2012. The complex is the main hub for national flag carrier SriLankan Airways, as well as for the low-cost carrier Mihin Lanka. Other airlines providing routes include Aeroflot, Air India, Cathay Pacific, Air Asia, Emirates, GulfAir, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines and several North African carriers. A small selection of Colombo Airport hotels can be found between three and seven kilometres from the airport complex, all of which offer shuttle transfers for guests with time to kill.
