Tenerife Travel Guide
By air: Tenerife has better air options than the other Canary Islands, boasting two airports. In the north of the island, near La Laguna, you will find Los Rodeos Airport, while Reina Sofia, the newer of the two airports, can be found in the south, close to Costa del Silencio.
Most international flights now terminate at Reina Sofia airport and as a result it is the busier of the two airports with nearly 10 million passengers passing through every year. There is one terminal here and on Fridays, one flight lands here every six minutes, with a small number of domestic flights. The airport has good facilities and plenty of transport options with buses on hand to take you to Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, and Los Cristianos.
By ferry: there are a number of different ferry options to Tenerife. Transmediterranea is one of the larger companies and provides a service from Cadiz to Santa Cruz once a week. The journey is long, at 48 hours, but the ship has good sleeping quarters as well as some children’s play areas. There are also routes between Tenerife and other Canary Islands operated by Fred Olsen, Naviera Armas, and Transmediterranea.
There are 14 crossing from Las Palmas every week, with a journey time of three hours. Journeys leave four times per week for Santa Cruz, taking six hours and there is a weekly ferry from Puerto del Rosario which takes 14 hours. A number of these ferries allow vehicles onboard, so it is possible to bring your car to Tenerife.
