Tenerife Travel Guide - Day Trips
Santa Cruz: the capital city of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, has much to offer visitors and its range of cultural and historic sights make it a good place to spend a day. The Natural History Museum, with its displays of artefacts from Tenerife’s history and the collection in the Art museum are both well worth a visit.
For Archaeology enthusiasts there is an Archaeological Museum as well as some interesting buildings; the 18th century baroque church of San Francisco and the Palace of Carta are typical of canary island design, with intricate balconies and an interior courtyard. There is also good tax-free shopping here, with many shops along the Plaza de Espana to the Plaza de Candelaria. Santa Cruz’s port is one of the busiest in the world and there often shows, concerts, and yacht races here.
The village has a rich history having been established in the 16th century and the Spanish saint and missionary Hermano Pedro de San Jose de Betancurt was born here in 1626. The church of San Pedro is a small church in Vilaflor, traditional of the area.
Gomera: if you fancy getting off the island for a day, then the beautiful island of Gomera, located 22 kms off the coast of Tenerife, makes for an excellent day trip. It is possible to see whales and dolphins on the ferry crossing and the scenery and views are quite stunning.
