Attractions in Marbella
The over-development and ugly tower blocks has lessened the appeal of Marbella from what was once a quaint old fishing village. Fortunately, it still has some old sites that are worth seeing such as the town hall, the ancient Moorish walls and a number of medieval ruins.
The cobblestone streets of the Old Town are a lovely place to stroll around and are filled with good cafes and restaurants. What attracts most people to the area is the natural beauty and the two main beaches. Although there are better beaches in Spain, Marbella thrives on its upmarket reputation and a place where the rich visit for their holidays.
The Town Hall: can be found on the Plaza de los Naranjos and was constructed in 1568. There are the original Council Chambers inside the Town Hall which are currently on 2 floors. The upper floor features an artistic ceiling carved in a Mudejar style and the walls are covered with interesting murals dating from 1572. The right hand side of the building has a series of commemorative plaques in honour of the conquering of the city.
Malaga Cathedral: or Catedral de la Encarnacion, is a mixture of architectural styles from Gothic to Renaissance to Baroque. Building took place over two centuries, hence the reason for the different styles. The second tower was never completed due to a lack of funds and it has become known as ‘la manquita’ or one-armed lady. There are some notable works of art inside the Cathedral including many representations of the Virgin and the 17th century cedar wood and mahogany choir stalls.
Murallas del Castillo: can be found in the heart of the old quarter and is the only construction that still remains from the Muslim era. The Arab castle as well as its city walls was originally constructed in the 10th century and then later enlarged by the Nazaries in the 14th century.
