January Festivals
The Festival of San Sebastian: the patron saint of Palma is celebrated in a colourful festival in January with animal blessing ceremonies as well as pet processions. Revelta i Beneides de Sant Antoni Abat: this two day festival held every January is great fun to witness, with locals dressing in traditional costumes and enjoying various parades and activities, as well as plenty of good food and drink. Semana Santa: this festival, also known as Holy Week, is one of the biggest religious festivals in Spain. The celebrations start on Palm Sunday and recall the events of the passion of Christ. In the evening there are street parades. On Maundy Thursday, the ‘La Sang’ procession takes place with a representation of the crucified body of Christ taken through the streets. June Festivals
Corpus Christi: this June festival is an important date in the Catholic calendar and is celebrated in a number of ways. An interesting dance, ‘The Dance of the Eagles’ takes place in Pollenca, with other towns celebrating with their own festive activities. October Festivals
Dia de la Hispanidad: is a national holiday all across Spain, and celebrates the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492. It is held every October. |
