By air: the majority of international visitors arrive at Madrid via the Barajas International Airport; a four terminal facility located just eight miles northeast of the city. The airport is a hub for Spanish carriers such as Iberia Airlines and provides the main gateway to the Iberian Peninsula from other European countries as well as from America and the rest of the world.
With all four terminals fully operational, the airport now has a capacity for over 70 million passengers per year and is listed as one of the world’s 20 busiest airports. The opening of the fourth terminal has seen previous delay issues reduced significantly and the overall performance of the airport improve.
By bus: the Eurolines bus company provides coach services to Madrid from a variety of countries within Europe. UK visitors can pick up coaches from London’s Victoria station. Bus travel to Madrid from abroad is not an especially popular option on account of taking several days to reach the destination.
By road: driving to Madrid is possible with options available from the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany. All routes go via France and it’s necessary to use the French Expressways before making a border crossing close to Biarritz.
