Traditional Spanish eateries can be found around areas such as Lavapies, La Latina and Plaza Mayor while a mix of traditional and modern can be found in the Plaza de la Paja. A wealth of smaller more intimate eateries can be found in the labyrinth of streets breaking off from the main city drag.
Among dishes specific to the city, you’ll find the popular cocido madrilene, a stew consisting vegetables, chickpeas, chicken, beef and pork; besugo al hor which is a dish with baked bream and tortilla de patatas which is a potato omelette. Tapas are as popular in Madrid as they are anywhere in Spain and you’ll find no shortage of restaurants offering the popular selection of small dishes which allow diners to try a little bit of everything.
