Introduction to Valencia - Alfafar
Alfafar is a southern suburb of Valencia, the charming capital of the Old Kingdom along Spain's eastern coast and famous across the region for its Fallas Festival held every March. The city was once crossed by the river Turia, now redirected to flow around the south of the city centre, creating a divide between it and Alfafar. In an effort to become a more alluring tourist destination, massive construction has occurred in the metropolitan area during the past decade, including the magnificent project of the City of Arts and Science, designed by the famous Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava. This interesting post-modern spectacle is located at the southern tip of a beautiful municipal park on the other side of the highway from several Alfafar hotels and includes a science museum, opera house, planetarium, IMAX cinema and aquarium. The city's many notable historic sights include the old city square, the Seu Cathedral and the Lotja, a beautiful Gothic structure flanking by gargoyles. It's only a short drive to Mediterranean beaches - though the city famously distances itself from its coast.Visit our Valencia Travel Guide
