Introduction to Teruel - Albarracin
The medieval village of Albarracin is considered among the most beautiful in all of Spain. This village, under 300kms east of Madrid and 28kms west of the city of Teruel, may be relatively small in population, but it is packed with historic landmarks and generous hospitality. A former convent and a former palace have both been converted to beautiful Albarracin hotels. This was Spain's only Moorish village which was handed over in peace to Christian armies during centuries of fighting against the Arabs. A monument of the village's emblem, a tiny bull, stands in Plaza del Torico, a wedge shaped corner in the village's old quarter. The old quarter is also within walking distance of all five of the Mudejar, towers which still stand in Albarracin today. Both the San Martin and San Salvador towers date from the 12th century, while the famous Lovers of Teruel tombs lie within the San Pedro Church. A large ceramics collection is displayed inside the elegant mansion which now houses the Museo Provincial.
