Located 40kms southwest of Barcelona, the beach resort of Sitges has long been popular among Spain’s art community, and in more recent years, has become especially popular among gay and lesbian visitors. The stunning location of Sitges between dramatic hills and the Mediterranean Sea has earned it such nicknames as the jewel of the Mediterranean and the St Tropez of Spain. The hotels in Sitges are generally high quality and boast over 4,500 beds, half of which are located in four- star Sitges hotels. Sitges is also home to many budget hostels, but regardless of how large the budgets of visitors might be vacancies in Sitges hotels are hard to find during summer weekends, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended. Sitges is also an especially busy place during its annual film festival in early October and its lively Carnival which occurs each January and February.
